Corbally United was founded in 1979 when a committee from the Park Gardens area of Corbally decided to enter a team in the local schoolboy league.
At that meeting were well known Limerick soccer people including Eamonn Heffernan, Aidan Corr, Paddy Brennan, and long-time Corbally United chairman Kevin Kinsella.
The club won their first Schoolboy trophy in 1992, beating Prospect 3-1 in the Under 10 Cup. Players involved Eddie Hickey and Mike Smith, coached by Pat McNamara and John Hennessey.
The following year they managed to win the league title with the same team. Success followed success, adding teams each year to the age grades with teams winning league and cup titles along the way.
1993 saw Corbally reach the final of the National Cup, playing a star studded Home Farm team at the Fairgreen. The match was a close affair with Corbally taking the lead early on with Home Farm equalising near the break. The Dublin side scored the winner in injury time.
In 1996, the club decided to enter the Junior ranks under the management of ex-Star Rovers boss Joe Naughton. In 2001, the Junior team finally achieved promotion to the Premier League under the stewardship of Christy Coll.
2002 saw the Youth Team reach the Munster Cup final where they played Cork City. They were unlucky to lose out after a replay and a penalty shootout.
The biggest year for Corbally was in 1997 with the purchase of the grounds in Athlunkard. Previous to this United were mostly based in the Shannon Fields.
The purchase of Athlunkard enabled the club to extend its number and its facilities. Through the hard work of Christy McMahon, Kevin Kinsella, long-time chairman Pat Conway and The O’Driscoll family, key facilities were built.
Today the club has two full size playing pitches, extensive parking facilities and an astro turf pitch. We have twenty two teams affiliated to the local schoolboy league, with three teams to LDMC and one ladies team.
Today the current committee under the guidance of Chairman Marc Kiely and Secretary Colm McLoughlin are determined to keep on improving both facilities and standards for future generations of Corbally and the surrounding areas.
